Democracy (February 1987-November 2011)

Today, former President and Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was served a warrant of arrest for election sabotage, to which she was accused together with former Maguindanao Governor Andal Ampatuan, Sr., and COMELEC Provincial Election Supervisor Lintang Bedol. The First Gentleman was not included due to lack of probable cause.

Today, we have once again showed the world the scars of our democracy; using the government-fed public perception of an enemy to elicit public support — all in the guise of accountability and good governance. We have shown the world the dangers of a democracy when rested in the wrong hands with little or wrong minds. We have shown the world the our Supreme Court has been castrated by the Executive, totally destroying the balance of political powers.

Today, we are a divided nation; one side of those who support the administration; another side, of those who support the President; and the side of those who, tired of all these theatrics, just stopped to care. This administration has divided a nation that his predecessor tried so hard to unite. We have seen our President use the powers of his office to sow division among peoples.

Today, we have seen a culture set by this administration; a culture that instilled mistrust and mockery of another’s pains and sufferings. We have seen the tolerance of this administration to the mockery of the people to its former leader. We have all witnessed how the palace is silent about these attacks, and worse, its adding of fuel to the fire.

Today, we have witnessed the victory of powers-that-be against ordinary citizens whose only aim is to live a peaceful and quiet life. We have witnessed the death of due process and many of our rights. This administration has deleted Article III of the Constitution.

Today, we have jailed a citizen who is deemed innocent until proven guilty, even before her day in court. Days back we have seen this happen, and how it led to today.

To the Filipino People: I hope and pray that this administration return us back to democracy. Today, democracy has been demoted to an empty liberty.

Peace.
