JDV & The New House Leadership

The wee hours of February 5, 2008 bore witness to the ouster of Cong. Jose De Venecia, representative of the 4th District of Pangasinan and former House Speaker. After long hours of voting by our dear congressmen, it was finally decided that JDV did not have the numbers to continue on as House Speaker. At the same session, Prospero Nograles, a congressman from Davao City, ascended to the Speakership.

This change in the House leadership shall effect several aspects of the political landscape, adding more drama to the already dramatic political scene. This move definitely benefits Nograles, now positioned as third in line in presidential succession, and the new position gives him unprecedented media exposure.

Nograles is indeed the President’s choice for speaker, winning the Speakership unanimously. But his performance as Speaker, his responses to issues, and the dynamics of the house shall definitely be an interesting thing to watch.
